    Parental Job Loss and Children’s Health: Ten Years after the Massive Layoff of the SOEs’ Workers in China

    Beginning in the mid 1990s, China sped up its urban labor market reform and drastically restructured its state-owned enterprises (SOEs), which resulted in massive layoff of the SOEs' workers and a high unemployment rate. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the parents’ job loss on the health of their children, using six waves of the China Health and Nutrition Survey covering the period from 1991 to 2006. We find that paternal job loss has a significant negative effect on children's health, whilst maternal job loss has no significant effect. The rationale behind the findings is that the income loss resulting from maternal job loss is much smaller; at the same time, the unemployed mothers are likely to increase the time they devote to care of their children, and this may alleviate the negative effect resulting from maternal job loss.     A flexible and adaptive Simpler GMRES with deflated restarting for shifted linear systems

    In this paper, two efficient iterative algorithms based on the simpler GMRES method are proposed for solving shifted linear systems. To make full use of the shifted structure, the proposed algorithms utilizing the deflated restarting strategy and flexible preconditioning can significantly reduce the number of matrix-vector products and the elapsed CPU time.     Asymptotically Safe Higgs Inflation

    We construct a new inflation model in which the standard model Higgs boson couples minimally to gravity and acts as the inflaton. Our construction of Higgs inflation incorporates the standard model with Einstein gravity which exhibits asymptotic safety in the ultraviolet region. The slow roll condition is satisfied at large field value due to the asymptotically safe behavior of Higgs self-coupling at high energies.     Extending Higgs Inflation with TeV Scale New Physics

    Higgs inflation is among the most economical and predictive inflation models, although the original Higgs inflation requires tuning the Higgs or top mass away from its current experimental value by more than 2σ2\sigma deviations, and generally gives a negligible tensor-to-scalar ratio r103r \sim 10^{-3} (if away from the vicinity of critical point). In this work, we construct a minimal extension of Higgs inflation, by adding only two new weak-singlet particles at TeV scale, a vector-quark TT and a real scalar SS. The presence of singlets (T,S)(T, S) significantly impact the renormalization group running of the Higgs boson self-coupling. With this, our model provides a wider range of the tensor-to-scalar ratio r=O(0.1103)r = O(0.1 - 10^{-3}), consistent with the favored rr values by either BICEP2 or Planck data, while keeping the successful prediction of the spectral index ns0.96 n_s \simeq 0.96 . It further allows the Higgs and top masses to fully fit the collider measurements. We also discuss implications for searching the predicted TeV-scale vector-quark TT and scalar SS at the LHC and future high energy pp colliders.Comment: 20pp, to match JCAP Final Versio

    Spontaneous Spacetime Reduction and Unitary Weak Boson Scattering at the LHC

    Theories of quantum gravity predict spacetime dimensions to become reduced at high energies, a striking phenomenon known as spontaneous dimensional reduction (SDR). We construct an effective electroweak theory based on the standard model (SM) and incorporate the TeV-scale SDR, which exhibits good high energy behavior and ensures the unitarity of weak gauge boson scattering. This also provides a natural solution to the hierarchy problem in the presence of scalar Higgs boson. We demonstrate that this model predicts unitary longitudinal weak boson scattering, and can be discriminated from the conventional 4d SM by the WW scattering experiments at the CERN LHC.Comment: Phys.     Topological phase in 1D1D topological Kondo insulator: Z2Z_{2} topological insulator, Haldane-like phase and Kondo breakdown

    We have simulated a half-filled 1D1D pp-wave periodic Anderson model with numerically exact projector quantum Monte Carlo technique, and the system is indeed located in the Haldane-like state as detected in previous works on the pp-wave Kondo lattice model, though the soluble non-interacting limit corresponds to the conventional Z2Z_{2} topological insulator. The site-resolved magnetization in an open boundary system and strange correlator for the periodic boundary have been used to identify the mentioned topological states. Interestingly, the edge magnetization in the Haldane-like state is not saturated to unit magnetic moment due to the intrinsic charge fluctuation in our periodic Anderson-like model, which is beyond the description of the Kondo lattice-like model in existing literature. The finding here underlies the correlation driven topological state in this prototypical interacting topological state of matter and naive use of non-interacting picture should be taken care. Moreover, no trace of the surface Kondo breakdown at zero temperature is observed and it is suspected that frustration-like interaction may be crucial in inducing such radical destruction of Kondo screening. The findings here may be relevant to our understanding of interacting topological materials like topological Kondo insulator candidate SmB6_{6}.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted by EPJ
